Condolences
My Wood class teacher at Glendale Secondary School.
In 1977 and 1978
The BEST teacher . Friendly Kind respectful . RIP
Mr. Gretsky.
I have wonderful memories of Ed, Eleanor, Ted (my first crush), Nancy Jane, Cathy and Mary Lynn (Booboo). They were our neighbours on Barton Street in Stoney Creek...the best neighbours...and I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family. Ed taught me to make gravy. I didn’t do well the first try but he was a great teacher and for that I am grateful.
Sending hugs to the family. Wishing you peace.

What a great guy! Spent part of my spare period at the tech shop, building a cabinet, under his tutelage. Great teacher! He would give directions, but never took over. He would say "It has to be your own total production, in order for you to be proud of your accomplishment". Hadn't seen or heard about him for years, but that cabinet has always been a reminder of the good times I spent in the shop. May he rest in peace, and may the angels welcome him with open arms.
Wow, “Mr. G.”, gone. I was charging my phone to call Mrs. Gretzky and going through the Glendale Facebook page at the same time and came across notice of his death. He was my neighbour, friend, teacher. Generally I kept in touch after high school, visited numerous times up in Smithville. Talked to Mrs. G a few times during COVID. Missed a last visit by a day or two when lockdown occurred at the nursing home. I grew up with all of his children. Greatest guy ever. Universally loved by students. “Measure twice cut once,”, or, “use your pead lencil”. He had fun names for some students. Great picture, will always remember him.
My Deepest sympathies to Eleanor and your family.
I never knew Ed well, however my Mom And Dad were close friends and I heard many great stories about Ed & Eleanor's life through them.

My husband and I were fortunate to meet Ed and Eleanor when we were volunteers together in The Gambia West Africa. We were close in age so shared some of the same challenges. One of my memories of Ed that relates to his determination to get the “ job done “ was the picture of him ,Tilley hat planted firmly on his head as he maneuvered his bike through the sand, waving and calling out to folks he passed. Of course his white hair gave him a place of honour in the community! When the job at hand seemed too tough he could be heard saying “ ok let’s figure this out “
To Eleanor and family my deepest sympathy but I know you have precious memories

A great educator and mentor to many. Ed, you helped me out in a time of need when others would have turned away. This left me with a mark in how humanity can be so kind. To Ed's family, my sincerest condolences for your loss of such a great man.

33 years ago I had Mr Gretzky for home room. I was not a big fan of school but loved woodworking. Mr Gretzky knew that I was going to quit so he told me to just stay in his class and he would teach me carpentry so that I would have a skill when I left school for that I have and always will have the greatest respect for him.
Rest in the peace Mr Gretzky
