Oosterom, Hendrick (Harry): On Monday, August 13, 2012, at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, in his 95th year. Harry was the beloved husband of Wilma (nee Van Voorst), who departed this life in 2002. He is the father of Jennie Lyzenga (Dick), George Oosterom, and Nelle Oosterom, and father-in-law of Joan.  He was predeceased by his son, John Oosterom, in 2009.  Opa leaves behind seven grandchildren ­-- Krista Oosterom (Froi), Jill Dey (David), Holly Tkaczyk (Steve), Sonya Salituri (Chris), Cynthia Lyzenga (Neil), Marilyn Visser (Dan), Wendy Lyzenga (Salomon) -- and five great grandchildren -- Aiden, Sarah, Nathan, Daniel, and Heidi. Survived by his sister Jopie Wismeijer (Kees).  Harry will also be sadly missed by his niece Nel Van Os.  Predeceased by five brothers and two sisters. Harry was born in Kockengen, Netherlands, on March 24, 1918. He served in the Dutch army for two-and-a-half years and saw action in an anti-aircraft unit at den Helder during the invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940. In 1952, he and his young family emigrated to Canada, settling first in Alberta and later in Smithville, Ontario. He worked all of his life as a bricklayer, retiring at age 72. He loved music, and at one time served as a church organist and played in a brass band. Harry had a lively, independent spirit and stayed in his own home until the end. He will be sorely missed. Visitation is at Merritt Funeral Home, 287 Station Street, Smithville from 7-9 pm on Thursday, August 16. The funeral service will be held at 11 am, Friday, August 17, at Smithville Christian Reformed Church (6522 Smithville Road).  Interment Merritt Settlement Cemetery will precede the service.  If desired, memorial donations to the West Lincoln Memorial Auxiliary would be appreciated and can be made through the funeral home.
